Why This Journey

The Buddha's Life, From Enlightenment to Nirvana — and Into Nepal

Few journeys let you trace a single life story across two countries the way this one does. In just eight days, you move through the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, the site of his first sermon, his place of death, and finally his birthplace across the border in Nepal — closing in Kathmandu, a city of living Buddhist and Hindu tradition. Combined with Kolkata's colonial heritage and Varanasi's riverside rituals, it is a compact but complete pilgrimage for anyone drawn to Buddhist history or simply the layered spirituality of the Gangetic plain.

Yes, since the itinerary crosses into Nepal to visit Lumbini and Kathmandu, travelers will need to arrange Nepal entry requirements in addition to their Indian visa; our team advises on the process during planning.

How is this tour different from the 14-day Buddhist Trail of India?

This is a more compact 8-day version covering the essential sites — Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Lumbini — plus an extension into Kathmandu, rather than the fuller circuit including Shravasti and Vaishali.

What is Nalanda and why is it included?

Nalanda was one of the world's earliest international residential universities, attracting scholars from across Asia; its ruins are visited on Day 3 alongside nearby Rajgir.

What will I see in Kathmandu on this tour?

The itinerary includes Swayambhunath, one of Kathmandu's oldest Buddhist sites overlooking the valley, giving a glimpse of Nepal's own centuries of Buddhist and Hindu cultural tradition.

Is this tour suitable if I only have about a week?

Yes, at 8 days / 7 nights this is our most time-efficient Buddhist circuit covering both India and Nepal, ideal for travelers with limited time who still want to see the core pilgrimage sites.
